Our Story

Jacque and Elizabeth AsherI am Jacqueline Asher and my daughter is Elizabeth Asher. Together we own Tijeras Hair Co., an award winning hair salon in Albuquerque, New Mexico. We have also created our own very successful line of hair care products, Tijeras Naturals.  Between the two of us we have over 60 years of experience in the fields of client service, manufacturing and sales. We understand the challenges faced by small businesses, manufacturers and artisans during tough economic times.  We are also deeply committed to giving back to our community. It is this wide range of business experience and our heart for social causes that started us on the road to SugarShopper.com.

The SugarShopper story began in September 2009. That was when we decided to take a more proactive position in giving back to our community, in spite of having no knowledge of fundraising.  We had been cutting hair for those who had lost their jobs or who were in need, but we envisioned an event that would have a more lasting impact.  We decided to host a fundraiser using our product line. We selected two deserving organizations: New Mexico Veteran's Integration Center and Blue Star Mothers. The veterans organization needed mattresses and the mothers of service men and women had run out of money to send much needed packages to the overseas troops.

To make a long story short, we failed miserably! We did not raise one cent! Back in the salon Elizabeth told the story to a client and another client, Judy, overheard. She quietly lifted the hair dryer, reached down for her purse, removed paper and pen and asked "what are the names of the two organizations?".

JudyA few weeks later Judy called and invited us to a celebration. We asked "what are we celebrating?".  Without saying anything to us, Judy and her sister, Meredith, had donated $100,000 to each of our organizations. What a celebration!  We received many genuine thanks and hugs from the vets and the mothers.  Over and over we were asked what part we played in that amazing event.  Our answer was that we connected Judy and Meredith to the nonprofit organizations, that's all. That day we were forcefully reminded that we never know what the results of our small efforts will be in the big picture of the universe.

A heartfelt "thank you" goes to Judy and Meredith for their generosity, which has made a big difference in the lives of many.

That experience changed our lives and our direction. We identified our two passions. One is to help nonprofits, who do an amazing job keeping the balance for social causes. The other is to facilitate sales for small to medium manufacturers and artisans who struggle in this economy.  SugarShopper.com, a new and exciting  concept combining e-commerce shopping and giving to nonprofits, grew from that humble beginning.

We invite you to join us at SugarShopper - "Where Every Purchase Has a Sweet Purpose".
